Any ideas for a saying to put on our bucket of birdseed that is getting tossed on us?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

We are having our guests toss the birdseed on us as we walk back down the isle after the officiant pronounces us husband and wife. I am looking for something short and sweet, or maybe a cute little rhyme or something. Any ideas, anybody?

I would like to set up a bird feeder, but I’m in an area with legions of squirrels….I can’t recall seeing squirrels around finch feeders, but it could be wishful thinking on my part. I was just wondering what you guys thought…

Thanks

We have just got a nice playhouse with a window and now we want to get a hanging bird feeder for outside the window so they can sit inside the house and watch the birds. What type of feeder and food would attract the most birds? I dont mind if squirrels steal the food so long as my kids can watch.

I want to show you the famous rose bush by the entrance gate where bloggers write the best place to take photo’s and video’s.. My first trip here I had no idea what or where it was located.. There are a few entrance gates…. We are allowed to leave food at this location. This is why I am showing you this short clip. I need to move out of the way fast to make sure I can hide and get my camera ready to shoot the birds who are watching me from the trees above. They are always there waiting for people like me who bring bags of bird seed. The staff also will come out daily and do the same. The birds are trained to come here and they will find food. This is one of the many feeding stations that are set up in this beautiful Nature Park.

this is just to show the craziness that goes on at our bird feeder in the afternoon. Poor birds all act like they are starving! It’s no wonder we are going through so much seed every day – can’t keep up! It gets even more comical after adding a “suet” feeder (hard to see, but is hanging right next to the tube feeder) and is what the woodpecker babies are all fighting over. Kept trying to count how many birds were in the yard all at once, was impossible! I’d guess 20 or so … and because the quality is so bad you couldn’t see the half dozen chickadees that were in the cage feeder at any given time. craziness!

ALRIGHT! I'm SICK of them! Now how….?

How do I get rid of flocks of black birds?

I have two poles with a total of 8 feeders on them. For the first few weeks of May & June, I had cardinals, gold finches, Downy woodpeckers, purple house finches, nuthatches and chickadees.

But all of a sudden the grackles and starlings took over and all I ever see are occasional blue jays who aren’t afraid of the "black plague."

Is there a way to selectively get rid of certain birds? I use a variety of feed including safflower. Peanuts and sunflower seeds are gone in one day. Shiny, sparkling things up in the trees have no effect. I don’t want to put up a fake owl as I will get NO birds!

So, now what?

This is getting expensive!
I live in a residential neighborhood so I don’t dare use all the fire power suggested.
MsLucy!

I didn’t invite the black birds. Until this year, after 20 or so years of feeders, all the birds were the "nice" variety. Many colors, songs, etc. Hummingbirds too.

I think the black birds weasled their way in here.

My idea was that maybe someone knew of seed combination that they couldn’t stand.
Don’t get so bent out of shape!

Fox and skunk, graze on sunflower seeds in Danforth, Maine

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

Recorded on October 17, 2009 using a Flip Video camcorder. For those who are not tired of skunks or foxes….LOL…in this video, you will see a fox and skunk become accustomed to each other as they both graze on sunflower seeds from my bird feeders. Previously, I had videoed my baby skunks, adult cats, and me on the porch, this summer. Lately, the baby skunks disappeared, and the fox showed up, apparently eating the sunflower seeds that the crows/grackles throw on the ground (and some I had placed there last night). The grackles show up, and an adult will eat a few sunflower seeds, and throw dozens on the ground for the baby birds. And I was quite happy with this, as all of the seeds were eaten, as opposed to the millet seed I used to buy, which mostly lay on the ground, rotting, after the birds ate the choice sunflower seeds. Tonight, I saw one of the adult skunks and fox threatening each other. I grabbed my video camera, and started shooting. Over a 10 minute period, the fox and skunk got used to each other, and both chewed over the sunflower seeds, their muzzles about a yard apart. They work hard at it, as most of the stuff you see there are hulls, and they have to do a bit of searching to find seeds that have not already been cracked and eaten. But apparently, they must be having some success, or getting some nutrition, or else they would not continue to chew and search for uneaten seeds among the discarded hulls. Perhaps this shows how absolutely boring my life must
