SHTF Militia — DIY Grass Beds / Feeders For Chickens

www.shtfmilitia.com DIY Grass Beds / Feeders For Chickens by Johnny How to make grass beds for chickens, I am not sure how this will work out it is just something I have wanted to try for a very long time. Materials: Chafing Pans Stucco wire or gutter screen zip ties or tying wire grass seed or sod and your soil of choice (we used top soil and peat moss) Optional – Use an under the bed container as a green house to stimulate the grass growth. Tools: Something sharp to poke holes (we used a GIG and leather man scissors) Scissors or wire cutters (depends on if your using plastic or metal screen) Small shovel or your hands Basically what we are doing is taking a chaffing pan poking some holes in it and adding some peat moss and topsoil in then mixing in grass seed. Then we cover the top with some simple plastic or metal stucco wire or gutter screen and zip tying into place. Then we placed in an under the bed container that we flipped up-side down to make a small green house. The idea behind this is to make a couple of them and rotate them with the chickens so when they eat one you can replace it with another while the other one grows back. The screen is to try to prevent them from killing the whole grass roots by keeping a buffer zone between the chickens and the grass. www.shtfmilitia.com

is birdseed any good as a substitute for substrate?

because i’m getting a snake and i’m thinking birdseed will be smooth on their skin, and if they accidentally engulf any bits while they’re eating a fuzzy / pinky / whatever then it won’t harm them. plus it’s cheap! whadda ya think?
millet seed by the way – not the stuff with sunflower seeds.

    Ground Feeder

mdc4.mdc.mo.gov Go to our website for more Handy Hints info. A good backyard bird habitat will have something for everyone. Mourning doves, cardinals, and sparrows…among others…prefer to forage for food on the ground and rarely visit traditional bird feeders. But you can still provide for them with a simple ground feeder! You’ll need wood…like this rough-sawn cedar…a 20-inch square of aluminum house screen…nails…a staple gun and staples. Following the instructions, carefully measure and cut out the sixteen segments. After you assemble the first, inner, square…stretch the screen over it from one bottom outside edge to the other. Staple the screen in place along the outside edge. Then assemble the rest of the feeder. Slide the screened floor into the base, where it rests on top of the legs, and fill it with a mix of sunflower seeds, millet and milo. Rotting seed isn’t a problem because the water drains through the screen…and when the feeder needs cleaning, all you have to do is lift the floor out and hose it off.
