Does anyone know of a way to keep birdseed from sprouting?
July 17, 2010 Seed Bird Feeder
I have alot of birdfeeders in our yard and sometimes the seed falls to the ground and then sprouts and then we have it growing right under the birdfeeders. Does anyone know how I can keep it from sprouting? I don’t want to take the feeders down because they are near our windows and we enjoy watching the birds while they are eating. Can someone please help with this problem?

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.
pour your birdseed into shallow baking pans and bake at 300 for half an hour.
Buy bird seed that has been treated so it will not sprout. Usually available from stores that specialize in Bird Seed. Its usually a little higher priced, but you get what you pay for.
Apart from getting feeders that have bigger catch trays, (you can make fine mess wire trays that you would then attach to and hang beneath the feeders,) cleaning up spilled seed is a fact of life when you feed the birds.
It is also very important to keep feeding areas clean and free of spilled seed as this discourages rodents from joining the feast. Please do not use herbicides on the spilled seed, as the birds will still pick around in it and could injest it.
Another very good point to note is – you can probably identify which type of seed most often ends up being thrown out of the feeder in favour of something else…….you might find less waste if you buy the specific kind of seed that your birds prefer. Even wild birds have their favourite.
Try a broadleaf weed pre-emergent.
