How long will it take for birds to notice and feed on a new bird feader?
I just bought one of those cheap hooks with the suction cups that stick to the window. Then i put on one of those instant feeder finch socks. Im wondering where i should put the hook cause now i have in middle of window. Will the birds still come? Plus i have a cat that loves to sit next to the window also, will that also scare the birds away? Should i move the hook at all or just leave where it is? Thank you
Also what about weather like rain, does it affect the bird seed?

Hummingbirds are fun, entertaining, full of energy and it’s easy to attract hummingbirds.
I think the cat will scare the birds if they can see him, at least at first. Then there will be one brave bird who gives it a shot, and then the others will come. Normally, it doesn’t take long at all for birds to notice the availability of seeds, and once they start calling each other on their little blackberry’s there will be a crowd. Another consideration is the type of feeder and seed you have chosen. A finch is a small bird, and their feeders and seeds are more specialized towards small birds. Ultimately, there need to be some of them around. I would give it a couple of days and see if there is any activity. If not, try moving it – maybe higher or another window – where the birds won’t see the cat. I suspect you want to amuse your cat as much as yourself, and bird feeders aren’t near as much fun if you can’t watch (your cat agrees). If nothing happens, consider getting a different type of feeder, one that can be placed away from the window so that the birds won’t be so cautious and you can still see. I have a regular feeder that I have secured to a deck railing about 10 feet from the window. The cat sits in the window for hours watching the show. Now my only complaint is that bird seed is expensive (they eat it fast) and the squirrels have foiled every diabolical barrier I have invented, and they eat A LOT! Good luck.
not long. id say 3 days at the most…birds are ALWAYS looking for food
Most pretty much within a day or 2. They must know what feeders look like. It amazes me how they know. Can they smell it? I don’t know! I do know for a thistle feeder for gold finches it takes 2 to three weeks based on my experience with starting those in a new area. Good luck and enjoy! Sorry…didn’t see the rest of your post…I have a feeder at my kitchen window and sometimes my cat sees them and jumps up there…but they come back again. The finch sock should be hanging from a hook or a tree. Get one of those hooks that go in the ground…used for a plant hanger sometimes…the birds should find the window one….but the food may go quick. The finch feeder should be separate from the other.
well not very long because when they get hungry they got to were there is food and eat untill they are full
