Is buckwheat healthy for conures?

I recently got Nutriphase® Safflower Blend for Cockatiels Bird Food

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753469

for my green cheek since he loves the safflower seeds and I thought it would be a blend with his pellet food (since I only pick out a few safflower from the mix to go with the pellets), and I’ve also noticed that he loves the buckwheat seeds in it as well, and I was wondering if it is healthy for him, or rather, healthier than the safflower seeds? so I can judge if it’s okay to put more in his blend, or make sure there isn’t a lot?

Can wild birds be fed seed meant for pet birds? I have blue jays, cardinals, sparrows, and european starlings mostly outside, and was wondering if I can feed them pet bird seed? I noticed some canary seed has color enhancing red coloring in the seed and i’m guessing this will help the cardinals be brighter color. What bird food for what species if it’s ok should I buy for them as a treat?

Will hummingbird's visit my feeder if it's next to another bird feeder?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I put my hummingbird feeder hanging off a hook on the pole I have regular bird food in (the seed kind). I know I have hummers, b/c I saw one this morning, but I have yet to see him actually drinking. So I wondered… do hummers mind having other birds near by? I’ve looked, but I haven’t been able to find this information online yet…

thank you!
My bird feeder station is a tall pole, about 5 feet off the ground. on the top is the seed feeder, and it’s got two side hooks. It’s the side hook the hummer feeder is hanging off of.

thanks for the information. I really am new to hummers, so I just wondered if they minded the other birds being so close. Glad to hear they don’t. :)

Will bird seed grow flowers?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

I am thinking of growing sunflowers, and was just reading online that some birdseed actually sprouts flowers when birds knock it onto the ground from the feeder, and i was wondering: If i buy birdseed that is only made up of sunflower seeds, will they grow into sunflower plants? Buying seeds to plant is more expensive than buying bird food, but isnt it the same thing? Thanks in advance!
