Why wont finches use my bird feeder?!?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

I bought a Thistle Finch Screen bird Feeder about a week ago at petco. It was not a very cheap bird feeder. I also bought thistle seed. When i got home, i cleaned my bird feeder and filled it with thistle seed. I hung the feeder on my house gutter where i can watch them eat. It has been a week and not even one finch touched my feeder! I have another tube feeder filled with a different kind of seed also placed on my gutter and sparrows go crazy for it! Just the other day i had my window open and a finch perched on the window, but then flew away. I know finches are shy birds but the sparrows use my other bird feeder like their is no tomorrow. Please help me. I live in Chicago and right now it is summer and temperatures reach up to 111 degrees. thank you!

Is this a Hawk Sparrow? What's it doing?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

So I have a really nice bird feeding station, and since it’s spring, I’m starting to see a whole bunch of birds. this afternoon, I was watching the sparrows, chickadees, Juncos, and finches, when a much larger bird swooped down to the station. It didn’t try to harm any of the birds, but it scared them all away. It didn’t really eat the seed, it just kind of walked around, flying short distances, whenever it got spooked. The bird stood about a foot tall, and seemed to have a pretty large wing span. It’s back was a dull blue, and it had a fairly small head with a hawk-like beak. It had brown speckles on its chest, and didn’t seem very intimidated or intimidating. It walked around for 15 minutes or so, then flew into a nearby spruce tree where it still sits. My dad suggested that it was a Hawk Sparrow, and I kind of think so to. But if it is, why is it hanging around a bird feeder in the middle of the woods? He looks healthy, but it just seems out of character for that species to be doing that? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Can parakeets live with wild or semi-wild birds?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

I had given wild bird seed to a group of pigeons and sparrows that hang out in a certain area. I spotted a parakeet in the group who was eating the seed right along with the others. I was very surprised and am wondering if the bird will be o.k. out of doors like this.

Feed wild birds pet bird seed?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

Can wild birds be fed seed meant for pet birds? I have blue jays, cardinals, sparrows, and european starlings mostly outside, and was wondering if I can feed them pet bird seed? I noticed some canary seed has color enhancing red coloring in the seed and i’m guessing this will help the cardinals be brighter color. What bird food for what species if it’s ok should I buy for them as a treat?

And people wonder why I go through so much bird seed :)

This is the madness that takes place almost every day at the feeders about my house. This is not including the two feeders around the deck and the one in the front yard. There are sparrows, chickadees, finches, blue jays, mourning doves, red squirrels, black squirrels, rabbits, mice and the occasional hawk (cause lets face it this amount of birds is easy picking for a hawk), skunks and the occasional raccoon. I could sit for hours watching all these birds flying about outside.

Why are the yellow finches staying away from my feeders? .?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

Used same bright yellow feeders, in same spots with fresh thistle as last year. Not a one single yellow finch has come to the feeders. A few sparrows found the one in the front of my house, but no even the sparrows are visiting the one in the backyard, and it is next to an inhabited birdhouse. What am I doing wrong this year than last? This is really causing my summer to have a kink in it. I love to watch the yellow finches feed at my feeders. Please give me suggestions as to what my problem might be. Thanks.

Picky birds at feeder?

The chickadees, tufted titmice, and nuthatches pick out the black sunflower seeds and leave everything else! (Perhaps this is my karma because I pick the M&Ms out of trail mix and leave the raisins…) I haven’t gotten any sparrows or doves, so no one is eating the millet or safflower. Should I cave in and buy all black sunflower seeds next time? Or are the millet-eaters on their way? Tell me, experienced birders!
