Is my Cockatiel food really unhealthy?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I couple weeks ago I got a new brand of cockatiel food because i ran out and before i had just this blend of cockatiel seeds i got from the pet store i bought my bird at, which is really far away and i can’t go there every time i need more bird seed. So my mom brought home this stuff called Premium Cockatiel Food by 3-D Pet Products. And it looks like a bucket of treats! Its mostly Millet, Sunflower seeds and artificially colored seeds (including Red #40) It also has salt, and cane molasses in it! I mean it does have some good ingredients like egg, safflower and canary grass in it too but about 80% of just sunflower seeds and millet.Isn’t that really unhealthy? Should I throw in certain fruits and vegetables? What kind?

Tell me what you think..

He isnt acting differently but that doesnt mean he is healthy. But I noticed today that he isn’t really all that excited to get his food bowl refilled anymore.
With his old food, if he saw me grab his food bucket he got all excited and would start pacing and running around like a happy puppy, he would almost fall over with excitement. But now i refill his bowl and he just looks over and he may or may not even come over and get it.

Using bird seed as a substrate?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

Ok so I have a beardie that i adopted in.. & I’m hearing so much crap about which substrates are good and which are bad.. I know for a fact that the walnut shells i have her on is UBER bad and i want to get her off of them asap!!!! so i asked around and a couple of my friends have told me that bird seed is an undiscorved great choice for a substrate.. some of the takes they have have bird seed with and without sunflower seeds.. and a lot of the little yellowish round seeds.. Now i know the little yellowish round seeds are fine because they can be digested and the beardie will LOVE them..now my question is about the sun flower seeds..I have a big bag of black oil sunflower seeds that i feed to wild birds.. Does anyone think she will be fine on this?

What type of birds eat this type of seed?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

I bought a wild bird seed mixture. I think it’s white millet seed, thistle seed and a handful of sunflower seeds. Apparenly the birds got picky and only wanted the sunflower seeds and the rest of the seeds are scattered everywhere. What type of birds eat the other types of seeds? I live in Southern California.

I need some suggestions on good wild bird feed for NE Texas.?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I live in the piney woods of North East Texas. As a practicing Wicca, I enjoy and respect nature. Since it has been so dry this year, I am trying to help feed the wild birds. I have put out sunflower seeds, wild bird feed, and thistle seeds. I will also make some suet to put out when it gets colder. I was just wondering if anyone els had any suggestions for bird feed. I also make sure they have plenty of fresh water. Can anyone help me?

My GC conure has become very mean, all of a sudden?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

For about 3 days now- my loving 5 year old conure, Mickey, has become a terrorist. He used to give kisses, love hugs and scratches and hardly left my shoulder and now, he’s molting alot of feathers and won’t let me near him. When I walk near his cage or playstand he shreds his toys, like he’s showing me what he will do to me- it’s quite terrifying. He won’t let me hold him, touch him or anything now. He’s bit me at least 5 times in these three days and he’s a total different bird- no big change in diet except extra sunflower seeds, which i have cut out- (his food is a safflower formula, no sunflowers so I feed them as treats) He’s climbing and flying normal, and he is full of energy- his droppings are normal and he’s eating/drinking as normal too.

Why do Australian magpies favour sunflower seeds over other types of seed?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

Whenever I put out wild bird seed mix for the magpies, they’ll eat the black sunflower seeds and leave the rest. Are their beaks not suited to cracking open the other seeds, or perhaps do sunflower seeds contain the nutrients they need?

Is it safe for me to eat sunflower seeds from my "wild bird seed" mix?

They’re way softer than normal sunflower seeds made for resale, and unsalted, but are they safe for me to eat like normal?

Why did the seed in my bird feeders go bad?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

Two weeks ago, I bought three bird feeders and put them in my back yard. Watching the birds, I noticed that while one feeder (made of wire with sunflower seeds inside) was very popular, the birds basically ignored the other two (both plastic tubes, one large with mixed seed and one finch-sized with thistle seed). The sunflower seed feeder was almost empty today, so I went outside to refill it and I figured I would just dump out the seed from my other two feeders and refill to see if the birds would be tempted by fresh seed.
To my surprise, the seed in the bottom half of the big tube feeder has all sprouted inside of the feeder, and it had congealed into a big nasty mess that I could not clean out. Worse yet, the thistle seed was moldy and full of what I think were maggots (I didn’t care to look too closely). Both feeders are in the trash now.
What went wrong? I live in an area that is very humid for much of the year; does that cause excessive moisture to build up inside the plastic tubes? Should I only use the wire type feeders?

is birdseed any good as a substitute for substrate?

because i’m getting a snake and i’m thinking birdseed will be smooth on their skin, and if they accidentally engulf any bits while they’re eating a fuzzy / pinky / whatever then it won’t harm them. plus it’s cheap! whadda ya think?
millet seed by the way – not the stuff with sunflower seeds.

Can humans eat the sunflower seeds that's made for birds (bird seeds)?

I was shopping at a home improvement store and seen two employees talking and eating sunflower seeds as another employee was fixing a ripped bag of sunflower bird seeds that had fallen on the floor. It does say on the bird seed bag "Not For Human Consumption". But why exactly?
