Can Anyone Help With A Baby Wild Bird?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

A well-meaning child in my neighborhood brought me a baby wild bird. He found it in the middle of the street and had no idea where the nest was. The bird has most of its feathers and jumps up and down, fluttering its wings as though trying to fly. I don’t know what species it is. It resembles a mockingbird and has white patches on its wings; the belly is lightly speckled. The dominant color is gray/buff. But the tail is short.

I’ve offered it bird seed and insects, with no apparent interest.

It’s dark here now, and a lot of cats roam around here, so I thought I would keep it indoors tonight. Then tomorrow I thought I would put it outside in the yard and see if it can fly.

Am I doing the right thing? What do I do if it doesn’t fly? Any advice would be appreciated. And believe me, if I had even a general idea where to find the nest, I would take it there, but I don’t.

Bird feeding – how to attract and feed wild birds away from home?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I’ve loved birds for many, many years, but I never really thought about feeding and watching them until now! I’m a road biker, and with plenty of natural beauty around where I live, I come across plenty of birds on my rides. Today I biked out to a couple ponds and tossed bird seed here and there, trying to lure some birds into a free meal.

It didn’t go so well. They either ignored me entirely, or I tossed the seed to close to them and I scared them off. I was using a common wild bird mix from the grocery store, but the birds didn’t seem too interested.

Is it fairly hard to get the attention of small wild birds? Do you have any tips for me? I’d really like to get a couple birds close to me so I can film them.

Thanks!

Wild bird experts please help!!?

I have a flycatcher of some sort. I know he is a wild bird, but I didn’t catch him. He chose to come live with me. He was on my husband’s car last summer when he got out of work and he opened the door, the bird flew in and rode home on his shoulder.

He would not eat solid foods. We had to feed him bird formula. I offered him solids and he wouldn’t take them for a few weeks. I’m not sure what to feed him because flycatchers aren’t pets and there aren’t a lot of resources for me. On a daily basis I’ve been giving him mealworms, blueberries, some cockatiel bird seed (He eats them in small amounts, though I don’t know if he should eat them, which is why I ask), and some millet (also not sure if this is good but he likes it). On occaison I have given him strawberries and I also give him all the potato bugs or spiders from my basement.

I’ve tried to train him to feed himself but he’s clueless. He wont eat unless I give it to him on a skewer or I put it in his dish. I
I did call a wild bird lady, and she said non-citrus fruits were good as treats on the side or an all meat diet, and that flycatchers like blueberries. I’m just not capable of catching flies so I don’t know if I need to get better at it, or if the bugs I’ve been using are okay.

I need some suggestions on good wild bird feed for NE Texas.?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I live in the piney woods of North East Texas. As a practicing Wicca, I enjoy and respect nature. Since it has been so dry this year, I am trying to help feed the wild birds. I have put out sunflower seeds, wild bird feed, and thistle seeds. I will also make some suet to put out when it gets colder. I was just wondering if anyone els had any suggestions for bird feed. I also make sure they have plenty of fresh water. Can anyone help me?

How can cage birds help our wild bird population?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

I do several things to help out our wild bird population;

1) I own rare breeds of birds and if these birds go extinct at least generations after us will be able to at least see them.

2) When I clean out my cages, I put the used seed and spillage out for the wild birds (not the stuff which is dirty, just the servicable stuff.)

3) I buy all my bird pellets from a company which is involved in 7 wild bird feeding projects (including wild breeding.)

4) I am a "dues paying" member of the Audubon Society, and build and place blue bird houses in my local park.

How else can I help out, to overcome "the drastic drop" in the wild bird population?

Can I put wild birds on a feeding schedule?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I am a senior on a fix income. To reduce the cost of wild bird seeds Could I hang My bird feeder for 4 hours in the AM and then take it down. I can put it up the same time every day as not to confused the birds.I don’t go out because I don’t drive any more. A 20 lbs of bird seeds only last me about 3 days.

Wild bird with a broken wing?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I found a wild bird in my yard today with a broken wing. I couldn’t stand to sit there and watch it through the window being helpless. So I picked it up and put it on a basket with bird seed and water. (only so the cats in the neighborhood wouldnt kill it) What are the chances for it surviving? What do I do?
