where i live theres a lot of wild birds and especially the every growing population of some sort of domesticated green parrots or finches… when my bread or bagels go stale i decided to give them to the birds which they seem to enjoy…so i been doing this a lot lately cause i like being a nice guy. but my question is, feeding stale bread and bagels bad for wild birds? are there any home foods that i can feed to birds when they expire or should i just buy a bag of bird seeds?

Wild bird question..Nesting mourning dove?? going it alone?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

A mourning dove made and is sitting on a nest in a rhodendron large shrub outside my bedroom window. Everything I have checked out on the web saws that the doves mate and work in pairs. That the male feeds the female while she sits on eggs and then helps feed the babies. WELL this Mom dove seems to be a single parent. Is this possible? I Never see any other bird near her. I have a good viewing point and do check on her often with out scaring her, as she is in direct view of my window. No male that I can see. I do throw out raisin bread and bird seed because I read that the doves are ground feeders and it is gone. I do not get up too early so am assuming she must eat at some times as she is living. but what about this two parent bird thing? I sure dont see it happening here. Anyone with any knowlege about this, or tips on how I can help more with out interfering (I dont want to scare her.) I love but dont know too much about wild birds, am doing research and will put up feeders in my new apartment.. (I live in New England usa where the winters are frigid and start early) Thanks and God bless , I welcome any answers. Rudeness will be reported, though.

Bird feeding – how to attract and feed wild birds away from home?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I’ve loved birds for many, many years, but I never really thought about feeding and watching them until now! I’m a road biker, and with plenty of natural beauty around where I live, I come across plenty of birds on my rides. Today I biked out to a couple ponds and tossed bird seed here and there, trying to lure some birds into a free meal.

It didn’t go so well. They either ignored me entirely, or I tossed the seed to close to them and I scared them off. I was using a common wild bird mix from the grocery store, but the birds didn’t seem too interested.

Is it fairly hard to get the attention of small wild birds? Do you have any tips for me? I’d really like to get a couple birds close to me so I can film them.

Thanks!

Using bird seed as a substrate?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

Ok so I have a beardie that i adopted in.. & I’m hearing so much crap about which substrates are good and which are bad.. I know for a fact that the walnut shells i have her on is UBER bad and i want to get her off of them asap!!!! so i asked around and a couple of my friends have told me that bird seed is an undiscorved great choice for a substrate.. some of the takes they have have bird seed with and without sunflower seeds.. and a lot of the little yellowish round seeds.. Now i know the little yellowish round seeds are fine because they can be digested and the beardie will LOVE them..now my question is about the sun flower seeds..I have a big bag of black oil sunflower seeds that i feed to wild birds.. Does anyone think she will be fine on this?

I need some suggestions on good wild bird feed for NE Texas.?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I live in the piney woods of North East Texas. As a practicing Wicca, I enjoy and respect nature. Since it has been so dry this year, I am trying to help feed the wild birds. I have put out sunflower seeds, wild bird feed, and thistle seeds. I will also make some suet to put out when it gets colder. I was just wondering if anyone els had any suggestions for bird feed. I also make sure they have plenty of fresh water. Can anyone help me?

How can cage birds help our wild bird population?

Posted by Filed Under Seed Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

I do several things to help out our wild bird population;

1) I own rare breeds of birds and if these birds go extinct at least generations after us will be able to at least see them.

2) When I clean out my cages, I put the used seed and spillage out for the wild birds (not the stuff which is dirty, just the servicable stuff.)

3) I buy all my bird pellets from a company which is involved in 7 wild bird feeding projects (including wild breeding.)

4) I am a "dues paying" member of the Audubon Society, and build and place blue bird houses in my local park.

How else can I help out, to overcome "the drastic drop" in the wild bird population?

Is parakeet feed safe for wild birds?

Is it good for wild birds to have inexpensive parakeet feed (with vitamins and esters) mixed in with regular wild bird seed? Esters are used to keep parakeet feathers shiny and healthy, and I don’t think wild birds have much need for shiny feathers (although it might help them attract a mate *lol*). Are the esters in parakeet seed safe for wild birds?
